Beneath the gloss and candy-coloured Tik Tok world of director Makez Rikweda’s FAT GIRL lies some very dark undercurrents including: binge eating disorder, social isolation and a graphic DIY lip job. The short film follows teenager Lexi whose obsession with her favourite influencer leads her down a dark path of destruction in a bid to look like her.
The idea for the story came to Makez during a family dinner in which a young Kylie Jenner-loving cousin’s lip burst, revealing just how pervasive cosmetic enhancements were among teenagers and how far they were willing to go to achieve these new beauty standards, even if they didn’t have the money. It proved to be a very popular topic among young girls, with hundreds answering the open-call audition and many more resorting to directly hounding the team on their social media to try to get an audition.
Fat Girl is the debut fiction film from London-based filmmaker Makez whose past works include the award-winning documentaries ONLY VOICE REMAINS (2019) and YOUNG AFGHANS (2013), as well as the visual art film, SOUND OF THE BIRDS (2022) which is currently being exhibited in galleries in California and Berlin. Makez is also the producer behind the 2016 Raindance ‘Best UK Series’ winner, ‘BLOOD, SWEAT & CHOKES’ and the upcoming queer comedy, LATE TO THE PARTY (2023). Alongside her film career, Makez has worked extensively in television, producing and directing for clients including Al Jazeera English, France 24, China Global Television, Associated Press, Adobe, Teen Vogue, ITN Productions, and the BBC.
The film was co-produced by Don Omope, the British-Nigerian talent behind the box office smash hits WEDDING PARTY and WEDDING PARTY 2 which are currently streaming on Netflix, as well as Sol Rikweda, a former Met Film graduate and BBC Studios producer currently working for Soho-based The Look, Emma Keeling, a New Zealand producer and director with over 25 years experience working for major international networks, and Clarissa Itschert, a German creative producer with thirteen fiction shorts and commercial work for Peloton.
The phenomenal cinematography has been created by National Film and Television graduate Rui Jiang Ong whose recent films include the BAFTA-winning ‘DO NOT FEED THE PIGEONS’ and ‘WATAMULA’, as well as work for brands including Disney, GQ, BULGARI, Universal Music and Harper’s Bazaar.
Lastly, Fat Girl’s crew was made up of more than 50% women and non-binary members, as well as a diverse cast and production team.
Fat Girl will screen at Holly Shorts Film Festival.

The State of Dance Music
House music, a genre born in the underground clubs of Chicago in the 1980s, has come a long way. With its infectious beats, soulful melodies, and vibrant subculture, it has become a global phenomenon. Over the decades, it has transformed and branched into numerous subgenres, but its core essence remains the same. In this article, we’ll explore the state of house music today.
1. The Resilience of the Underground:
House music’s roots lie in the underground club scene, and this spirit remains alive and well. While mainstream pop music trends come and go, house music continues to thrive in the underground, with an unwavering dedication to the music and the dance floor. Underground clubs and raves provide a space for creative experimentation, pushing boundaries, and fostering a sense of community that’s unique to the genre.
2. The Proliferation of Subgenres:
House music has evolved into a diverse family of subgenres. From deep house to tech house, progressive house to acid house, each subgenre brings its own flavor and style. This diversity ensures that there’s something for every taste within the house music spectrum. It also keeps the genre fresh and innovative, as artists continue to blend and redefine these subgenres.
3. A Global Phenomenon:
House music has transcended its Chicago origins to become a global phenomenon. It has touched every corner of the world, with thriving house music scenes in cities as diverse as Ibiza, Berlin, Miami, and Johannesburg. The global reach of the genre has not only expanded its fan base but also enriched it with diverse cultural influences.
4. Influence on Mainstream Pop:
House music has had a significant influence on mainstream pop music. Elements of house, such as four-on-the-floor beats and soulful vocal arrangements, can be heard in chart-topping hits. Artists like Daft Punk, Calvin Harris, and David Guetta have seamlessly blended house elements into pop music, introducing new audiences to the genre.
5. Technological Advancements:
Advancements in music production technology have had a profound impact on house music. The genre has always been at the forefront of utilizing new tools and techniques. Today, digital audio workstations, synthesizers, and MIDI controllers enable artists to create intricate, layered sounds that push the boundaries of what’s possible in electronic music.
6. A Resurgence of Vinyl:
While technology has ushered in the digital age of music, vinyl records have experienced a resurgence within the house music community. Vinyl not only offers a nostalgic connection to the roots of the genre but also a unique sound quality that many purists appreciate. Vinyl-only sets and limited edition releases have become a hallmark of the scene.
7. Social and Cultural Movements:
House music has often been associated with social and cultural movements. It has been the soundtrack to LGBTQ+ rights, unity, and inclusivity. From the early days of Chicago’s house scene to contemporary festivals, it has celebrated diversity and acceptance, offering a space for people of all backgrounds to come together.

The global connectivity of the digital age ensures that the genre will continue to transcend borders and cultures.

One-Line Review: Eric Roberson release the official music video of his latest single, “I Apologize.” “The song “I Apologize” has an old-school feeling that is genuine and right on time.”
News
“I Apologize” was written and produced by Eric Roberson, Jairus Mozee, Brett “B Dubb” Baker and Rodney Jones. “The song is inspired by the creative gumbo that feeds my music. The theatrical musicality of Stevie Wonder, heartfelt word play of Commissioned and the unapologetic low end approach of A Tribe Called Quest,” mentions Eric Roberson. The whimsical and entertaining music video for “I Apologize” was directed by Steven Jon. The video just made its global premiere on BET SOUL and it is currently on rotation.
“I Apologize,” is the second single to be released of a series of songs that are forthcoming. For the remainder of 2023, Eric Roberson will continue to wet the palates of fans and music lovers abroad, as he prepares to release a new song every month. This past June, In celebration of Black Music Month, Billboard Magazine provided Eric Roberson with the honor to be a guest columnist and write a column in celebration of the independent movement. The column provided five steps to a rewarding independent artist career.
Whether over the course of his seventeen beloved LPs (2001’s The Esoteric Movement to 2022’s Lessons) or through songwriting/production/vocal collaborations with the likes of Jill Scott, Dwele, Musiq Soulchild, Vivian Green, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Spinna and others, fine-tuned R&B music ears have come to recognize and make a somewhat spiritual connection with his everyday relatable, multi-influenced vibe which mirrors their own lives and experiences. “It’s R&B and soul music, but I’m a hip-hop dude,” Eric replies, of his influences as it relates to his music’s appeal.
Indeed, nothing less than heartfelt gratitude for the blessing of being able to continue releasing music through his very own Blue Erro Soul Entertainment, as well as accolades which have included two successive Grammy nominations for “Best Urban/Alternative Performance” (for “A Tale of two” in 2010; “Still” in 2011), a BET J Virtual Award for “Underground Artist of the Year” (2008), being distinguished as the first independent artist to be nominated for a BET Award in 2007 and sold-out tours throughout the world is what makes Eric Roberson, “The Soul Man himself“.
About Eric Roberson
As a GRAMMY Award-nominee, Singer, Songwriter, Producer and Howard University alum, Eric Roberson continues to break boundaries as an independent artist in an industry dominated by major labels, manufactured sounds and mainstream radio. Eric has achieved major milestones in his career, from being a successful songwriter and producer for notable artists such as Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Dwele, Vivian Green and countless others, to headlining sold out tours across the country.
Eric is celebrating over twenty years as an independent artist, creating “Honest Music” since 2001, which has afforded him the artistic freedom that isn’t typically offered in the mainstream music industry.
In 2020, Eric used this unprecedented time of solitude from the world to immerse himself creatively. With this, he created a powerful album, entitled “Hear from Here”, a musical cry out to its listeners who longed for a sound of hope. Roberson describes “Hear from Here” as an “act of service” to his devoted fans. In 2022, Mr. Soul himself, released his 17th studio album, “Lessons” to rave reviews. The album has gone to become a fan-favorite around the world. He later recorded the TOP 20 Billboard R&B song, “Lessons” (Remix) featuring Anthony Hamilton, Raheem DeVaughn and Kevin Ross to instant success. This superstar collaboration led to a surprise performance appearance at Verzuz battle featuring Anthony Hamilton and Musiq Soulchild, which left soul-music aficionados wanting more. He also recently released his first book, “LESSONS” (100 Thoughts on Life & Love).
Eric is a former Professor at the legendary Berklee College of Music in Boston. When asked about the position he stated that, “It was an opportunity that I couldn’t refuse. I truly believe that at all times we are teachers and students. I not only love teaching the students but learning from them as well.”
In 2017, Eric created “The Process”, a forum in which he invites fans to navigate through his creative experience. It allows fans to listen and comment to unreleased songs, thereby being a part of the “process” of making music. “We are losing so much of the culture that went with listening to music. Letting the fans watch us create the albums was our way of bringing some of the old music culture back.” says Eric.

Brown’s profound belief that making love transcends mere physicality, emphasizing the significance of connecting with a person’s mind, cherishing the bond with one’s spouse or significant other, and celebrating love in its myriad forms throughout every waking moment. Each song on this extraordinary album has been masterfully composed to reflect this deeply resonant sentiment, ensuring a soulstirring experience for every listener fortunate enough to partake in its melodic embrace.
J Brown’s musical style combines R&B, pop, and 90s influences, resulting in a refreshing fusion. prevails, J Brown strives to provide music with a moral foundation, leaving a lasting impact that transcends fleeting trends. His goal is for every race of people to recognize his music as not only good but enduring, rekindling the spirit of true love and meaningful connections and bringing back a long-forgotten time when all genres of music were played on any station as long as it was great music.
