The Percy Says Column
Politics and The Common Perception
Think back as far as you can remember and ask yourself, do politicians generally view my opinions and intelligence as something of sustenance or do they really think the general public is a bunch of lazy farts waiting to be fed by whomever as long as their daily lives aren’t being interrupted. You’ve got to wonder how can the majority of Republican candidates (Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul) running for presidential office identify with you, the common man or woman, when they aren’t working or middle class. They don’t run into the same daily issues that the common man or women have to deal with like unemployment, home foreclosure, lack of medical insurance, being homeless, having a fear of being deported and living paycheck to paycheck. As a matter of fact, the 4 Republican candidates currently on the campaign trail vying to be the Republican Nominee all make a hell of lot more money than you or I.
Mitt Romney earned more than $42 million over the past two years, and paid $6.2 million in taxes at an effective rate averaging 14 percent, according to documents provided by the Romney campaign today. -ABCNews.go.com Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is the former speaker of the House of Representatives, and according to analysis of his latest financial disclosure forms, his net worth (excluding his primary home) is between $6,700,000 and $30,135,000. -Bankrate.com/Finance/ Rick Santorum earned $1.3 million in income from January 2010 until August of last year from a variety of jobs, including a gig at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington and as a contributor on Fox News. -Money.CNN.com American medical doctor, author and politician, Ronald Ernest “Ron” Paul, has an estimated net worth of $4.9 million. -Therichest.org
None of us should be naive as to how much it cost to run a presidential campaign. But we should be aware and properly educated about who’s running and discern what these people really want because it’s not to help the common man or woman. When you really can’t identify with the common man or woman and you’ve never been in their shoes, how can you say you understand their plight. How can you say you are for the the regular folks when you don’t know the definition of being a regular folk?
The question is, am I stupid to believe these people or do I care what these people really stand for? Either way it’s your tax dollars they will spend with their buddies like a blank check. The purpose of politicians is to get elected and stay in office; no matter what the cost. “What is your purpose and who do you allow to handle your future?”
